Best known for her expressive portraits and sublime landscapes and seascapes, Maggi Hambling has also gained notoriety for her public sculptures including a tribute to Oscar Wilde in central London and Scallop on Aldeburgh beach. For all of her works, Hambling coniders the making of art as a battle cry, with ‘stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood’ written on the door of her studio. Here, Hambling uses one of her more common subjects, the skull, to create tension and composition through her own form of figuration.
