This original, vintage poster from 1982 was produced in conjunction with the publication of Warhol's Goethe prints by Editions Schellmann & Klüser, München. After seeing J.H. Wilhelm Tischbien's famous portrait of Goethe during a visit to the Stadel, Warhol was inspried to create his own portrait of the revered German writer. Using Tischbien's painting as a source, Warhol transformed the work by presenting Goethe as a symbol of German culture and creativity.
