“H13-8 Woody Bay” (2023) features a striking interplay of pink, grey, and white hues, with bold splashes and delicate drips creating a sense of movement across the composition. Drawing inspiration from Abstract Expressionism and Robert Motherwell’s “Beside the Sea” series, Damien Hirst explores the emotional and physical rhythms of the sea, inspired by crashing waves, the interplay of tides, and the dynamic interplay of the natural elements. He described working on these pieces as a profoundly physical and visceral act, paralleling the forces of nature. This piece, part of his “Where The Land Meets The Sea” series, reflects Hirst’s deep connection to coastal landscapes while addressing environmental consciousness. The artwork’s energetic brushwork and layered composition invite contemplation of life’s transient nature. At the same time, its ethereal quality speaks to the universal feelings tied to nature and the sublime situated on the ocean’s edge.
