David Shrigley is a contemporary British artist with an internationally renowned drawing practice. Shrigley’s work is humorous, interspersed with his witty observations and written commentary that satirizes everyday life and awkward interactions. Shrigley’s quick-witted drawings and hand-rendered texts are typically deadpan in their humour and reveal chance utterings like snippets of over-heard conversations. Recurring themes and thoughts pervade his storytelling and, through these, he finds and alludes to deeper meanings. Tackling serious issues, such as unemployment and child welfare, as well as more absurd subjects, including sexual fantasies about a squirrel, his fragmented narratives can be both poignant and funny. This work is a typical example of his style, demonstrating, among other things, his propensity to use animals and the stereotypes associated with them to allude to deeper social themes.
