Originally smartly decorated in a colonial style, it was repainted in the 1950s when the club passed to Michael Wojas, Ian Board's barman whom he had employed since 1981. Wojas had the club repainted in a "rather bilious green". Members described the staircase that led to the establishment as foul-smelling and flanked by dustbins, and talked of "going up the dirty stairs".
