A talented draughtsman, Fox combines traditional oil painting techniques with abstracted elements to create ethereal and evocative scenes. Typical of his style, Untitled II challenges the viewer with two separate pictorial planes. In the background, the grey outline of a ruined castle is distinguishable between the clouds. The foreground is marked roughly by thick layers of brown paint. What would otherwise be a placid landscape, with imagery reminiscent of the Dutch Golden Age, is ruptured by bold abstract brushstrokes, creating both an art historical and theoretical contrast between the old and the new, the traditional and the modern.
