In 1983 Auberbach was initially asked to produce a portrait of Provost Asa Briggs but when Landau paid a visit to the artist’s studio, it was decided that the conditions were unfit for the anticipated sitter. Thus, Landau asked Auerbach if he could sit for him instead and was told, 'If you are reliable and can come on Fridays.' Landau has commented on the patience required sitting for Auerbach, saying: 'There's an almost orgasmic feeling of completion when he does finish a picture'.
