A clear example of Ed Ruscha’s desire to analyse the power inherent in a word, this work, in presenting the viewer with a word so rich in meaning as ‘sin’, immediately provokes reaction. Seeking to challenge this, the artist breaks the word apart by changing the size and font of its compositional letters. Employing the simple immediacy of language to its full effect, Ruscha at once analyses and rejects pre-assumed associations.
