Lucian Freud banned the reproduction of this portrait of Francis Bacon in colour after the original painting was stolen in Berlin 1988. He explained he did so "as a kind of mourning, I've only allowed it to be reproduced in monochrome… In fact the painting is quite near monochrome - so it comes out quite well, and I thought it was a rather jokey equivalent to a black armband. You know -there is there it isn't!"
