We are delighted to announce a new exhibition, Contemporary Desert Art, curated and organised by guest curator Georgina Martin of Frewen Arts.
The exhibition presents large-scale paintings by award-winning Australian western desert artists, featuring Wangkatjunga collaborative works, Bugai Whyoulter, Yurnangurnu Nola Campbell, Wakartu Cory Surprise; Senior Martu artists Nyanjilpayi Nancy Chapman and Kumpaya Girgirba; Warakurna artists Maureen Baker, Cynthia Burke and Dorcas Bennett.
Australia’s Western Desert covers some 600,000 square kilometres of the continent, stretching from the Nullarbor Plain in the south to the Kimberley in the north, and from the Percival Lakes in the west through to the Pintupi lands in the Northern Territory. Encompassing The Great Sandy, Little Sandy and Gibson Deserts, it is home to the artists featured. The land is a network of sacred sites embodying complex and ancient cosmogonies, contours and spaces that hold profound meaning, intergenerational stories impressed deeply in country. The artists’ responses to their country and cultural lives are powerful testaments as well as masterful contemporary paintings.
