This wood engraving on paper presents a central male topless figure, arms crossed over his chest, adorned with a plethora of symbols and signs in the form of tattoos across his exposed skin. The two most prominent icons are the swallows which fly under the collar bones. The skin is in part, the canvas itself, the main pattern and design coming from the the human surface, as opposed to the material surface. A contrast in motif from the stern facial expression of the male figure, with the softness of the velvet cushion in which he rests his arms.
