A deep love of the environment is the driving force behind much of Nicholas Hughes’ work. Interested in environmentalism from an early age, an increasing awareness of the fragility and preciousness of nature motivated him to act for its preservation. The images he creates allude to universal Romantic themes allied to environmental sensibilities. Each work is a portrait of nature which seeks to illustrate the frail residue of the contemporary wilderness through reduced visions of the sublime within localised nature. Particular attention is is given to examining the space between the world that people inhabit and that which nature still claims as its own.
