Anish Kapoor's 'Scorched Earth' (2021) is a poignant work that emerged from the Migrate Art initiative to raise funds for refugees and homeless people. The work was inspired by the devastating actions of ISIS in Iraq, where they deliberately burned crops, leaving behind a landscape of destruction. The artist's striking image is created using an unconventional medium – paint pigment made from the ash of burnt crop fields in Iraq. Kapoor, known for his exploration of space, form, and material, ingeniously transformed this symbol of devastation into a medium for artistic expression and social commentary.

Kapoor's technique aligns with his broader artistic practice of manipulating materials to create thought-provoking visual experiences. Using ash as pigment adds layers of meaning to the work, connecting it directly to the land and the conflict that scarred it.

Scorched Earth is significant in Kapoor's oeuvre, demonstrating his ability to engage with pressing social and political issues through art. It reflects his ongoing interest in the interplay between material, form, and meaning while showcasing his commitment to humanitarian causes.
