In the present etching Freud depicted a dozing 'Eli', a whippet of his friend, David Dawson. This is one of three etchings in which Freud was inspired to portray dogs but this is the largest and most impressive of his canine creations. Freud's prints of dogs, the other two being of his own whippet, Pluto (1988) and Pluto, aged Twelve (2000), are amongst Freud's most tender works, transmitting the artist’s affection for animals.
