Francis Newton Souza was a Goan artist. He was a founding member of the Progressive Artists' Group of Bombay, and was the first post-independence Indian artist to achieve high recognition in the West. Although Souza had a very long, fruitful career, during which he experimented with various genres and styles, it is perhaps his figurative works, line drawings and series of ‘black paintings’ which he produced in London during the 1950s and 60s that are the most celebrated.
